Roundtables: Vertical Team Meetings
Background
Vertical teams have been defined by the school
district as the group of schools that track to a specific high school.
AISD no longer assigns Area Superintendents to oversee the district’s
eleven vertical teams. Instead a principal is designated in each vertical
team to serve a Lead Principal and to coordinate the many aspects of the
relationships between schools in their team. ACPTA and the Council of
Principals have created Roundtables to promote communications and to
foster a sense of community within each vertical team.
Roundtable Meetings
The Lead Principal and the ACPTA Vertical Team
Vice-President collaborate to plan the agenda for the meetings. The
Roundtables meet two or three times per semester. Those participating are
the Principals of all schools in a team, the PTA President of each school
and the ACPTA delegates. Parent Support Specialists can also be invited.
Other parents are welcome to sit in on the meetings. If a Principal or PTA
President cannot attend a particular meeting, they should select a
representative to attend the Roundtable in their place.
The benefit of these vertical team meetings is
community building on many levels. The various schools become more
connected as a team, and the administrators and parents learn more about
each other’s priorities and strategies. Resources can be exchanged or
shared among schools. For example, an elementary school might invite the
high school band to perform at one of their events. For a secondary
school, younger students and their parents can participate in the
secondary school’s open house. Ultimately the meetings can bring a
positive sense of community to a vertical team and improve the
effectiveness of the schools as a result.
Many schools do not have ACPTA delegates and no
replacement is proposed. For schools with no PTA, the president of their
PTO could represent those parents. When there is no parent organization, a
parent selected by the principal could represent the school.
The Roundtable schedules are listed on the
individual Team pages if the Vertical Team has provided their schedule to the ACPTA
Webmaster.
